Perception

I took this picture of the Kohala coast because I liked the colors. What you don’t see were the big storm clouds looming behind me. You would never guess this looking at this sunny picture. Our perspective or point of view completely changes our interpretation.

This is what I painted. The great thing about art is that you don’t have to actually paint what your eyes see. I think great art actually captures an emotion, which is rarely what is before your eyes.

Looking at this painting you might guess what my mood was…but you would probably be wrong. Well, maybe not wrong exactly, but much more nuanced than what meets the eye. I am on the verge of rediscovering myself and creating a new life. A turning point in what has been a life of difficulty and suffering. Striving to find the joy while being smothered in pain. Creating beauty out of everything ugly. Finding justice in dark circumstances. Wanting to live in a world of love while experiencing hate. Surely these things cannot co-exist and yet that is the yin and yang of this life. It isn’t either/or but both inclusive at the same time battling it out within to emerge as ?

You decide what comes of any situation. It is a tough concept to grasp. A cycle of crisis and victory. The hero’s journey. Do you see hope in this painting? I go forth with trepidation, fear, hope and uncertainty into the unknown once again. Alone. But not as alone as before. I rely on my inner strength and resilience and the love of dear friends as I discover again who I am and what my purpose is. My purpose is to be more and more myself letting life unfold as I strive to meet it with grace and love.

Where are you right now on your journey? What perspective could you shift to ease that path? I would love to hear from you.

  1. Aloha May! Very interesting indeed! And August 30 – oh my! That was a crucial moment. You pose some very interesting juxtapositions!
I think this is a pretty sweet and engaging place you have created and thank you for welcoming us all into it. I will be peeking in from time to time to see how it’s all unfolding.
May be well accompanied by the May style art work images, Come what May!
    A hui hou!
